New York City Initiatives
At the City level, NCPR is building on its successful effort to get a central brownfields office established and build a stronger City response to the thousands of vacant and abandoned brownfield sites across the City’s five boroughs. With the creation of the NYC Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) in 2008 and the passage of the Brownfields and Community Revitalization Act in 2009, OER has been empowered to undertake several community-supportive programs. NPCR is working collaboratively with OER to ensure that the brownfield initiatives in Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC are carried out in a way that helps advance community supported re-development of brownfield sites in low- and moderate-income (LMI) neighborhoods. In addition, NPCR is working with the Sustainability Advisory Board and OER on the development of the initiatives that will be included in PlaNYC 2.0, which will be unveiled by Mayor Bloomberg on Earth Day 2011.
